Erfiðlega hefur gengið að hefta för foreldra með ung börn inn að gosinu sem í flestum tilfellum eru erlendir ferðamenn og það þrátt fyrir góða upplýsingagjöf um að gossvæðið sé ekki staður fyrir ung börn að dvelja á. Börn og foreldrar þeirra hafa í mörgum tilfellum verið mjög illa búin og svo virðist sem fólk geri sér enga grein fyrir því hvar það er statt og hvað bíður þeirra á erfiðri og langri göngu að gosstöðvunum.
Að gefnu tilefni og með hagsmuni barna að leiðarljósi hefur lögreglustjórinn á Suðurnesjum því ákveðið að takmarka, að svo stöddu, aðgengi barna yngri en 12 ára að gosstöðvunum þegar svæðið er opið.
Eftirlit lögreglu og björgunarsveita verður með umferð ökutækja um Suðurstrandarvegi Eftirlit gangi eftir með þeim hætti sem nú er tilkynnt.
Heimild fyrir aðgerðum lögreglustjóra er sótt í 23. gr. laga um almannavarnir nr. 82/2008.

Although the Police, Civil Protection and first responders on site have repeatedly advised parents with young children against visiting the eruption, it appears that this advice has not been taken seriously, and in many cases, including with foreign tourists, has been ignored.
Often, children and their parents have been poorly equipped, have little knowledge of the local geography or the difficulty of the long walk to the eruption.
The Police Chief of Suðurnes, in the interests of public safety and with the welfare of children as a particular concern, has decided to limit the access of children under the age of 12 to the eruption site when the area is open to the public.
Police and rescue teams will continue monitor vehicle traffic in the area and on Suðurstrandarvegi.
